What is a banked reset, and how is it different from a regular usage reset?

TL;DR

A banked reset is an extra, separate allowance OpenAI grants on its own initiative. It doesn't affect how your regular usage is counted.

Full answer and how it works

A banked reset is extra usage that OpenAI's team grants on its own initiative around specific events, launches or as compensation.

It works differently from a regular usage reset:

  • Usage reset: a scheduled job clears the tokens or requests you've used in the current period. Your cap stays the same, and nothing carries over.
  • Banked reset: eligible accounts get a separate block of usage, or a one-time chance to reset their current limits on the spot. You apply it yourself in the desktop app or on the web.

We log the two as separate event types.
